The CORNer Store
Corn is found in some form in thousands of food and non-food items.
Corn also is used as a common packaging material.
The CORNer Grocery activities will help youth understand the importance
of corn in their lives. As they play Whack-a-Corn, they develop
listening and hand-eye coordination skills, while increasing their
understanding of the different forms of corn. Corn usually is hidden as oil,
cornmeal, cornstarch or a sweetener in grocery items.
While shopping in the store, youth develop counting and memorization skills as
they recognize which items contain corn. By using the hints, reasoning and
association skills are enhanced. For example, they learn that since corn can be a
sweetener and soda pop is sweet, corn may be in soda pop.
